Description:
Galanthamine is natural extracted from Lycoris radiate, is a tertiary alkaloid derived from snowdrop and closely related species. It acts as a reversible competitive acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, while acts weaker on butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). It is used in the treatment of disorders of the central nervous system and may be used as an antidote to nonpolarizing muscle relaxants. Galantamine hydrobromide is a white to almost white powder; Sparingly soluble in water; Insoluble chloroform, ether and alcohol.

Galantamine hydrobromide is the hydrobromide salt of galantamine and is a cholinesterase inhibitor can be extracted from Amaryllidaceae Lycoris plant. The III-phase clinical trials in the United Kingdom in 1998 have showed that this drug had dual mechanism of action of both inhibiting acetylcholinesterase and regulating nicotinic receptors.

Therefore, galantamine can improve the cognitive abilities of Alzheimer's patients and has been already applied as the drug of the treatment of mild to severe Alzheimer's disease (AD) drugs and has entered into market in EC countries. "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" has included the both the raw material and injection of galantamine hydrobromide.

Function:

Galanthamine extract is specific, competitive and reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is also an allosteric modulator at nicotinic cholinergic receptor sites potentiating cholinergic nicotinic neurotransmission. Both the acetylcholine and nicotine receptors have been suggested as areas related to cognitive impairment. Initially, Galanthamine extract was used in anesthesiology to antagonize the effects of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants, and since then it was rapidly introduced in other areas of medicine, i.e. neurology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, intensive care and resuscitation, cardiology, physiotherapy.
Galanthamine extract is a product with broad therapeutic index, allowing "soft" manifestation of its effect with individual dosing depending on the particular case.
Several trials already showed that Galantamine 16 and 24 mg/day significantly benefits the cognitive, functional, and behavioral symptoms of AD as compared with placebo and proved also to be very effective in symptomatic treatment of senile dementia of Alzheimer's type.
